This course has been designed for anyone who is either new to GC, or who wishes to expand their current knowledge and understanding about the technique as a whole.

All aspects of the technology and system are covered - from gas supplies, through sample introduction and column chemistries, to an overview of common detector types. The main focus is on fundamental concepts but important practical aspects and some basic troubleshooting will also be introduced.

During the 4 sessions we will essentially follow the path of the carrier gas through the system, discussing each section in detail as we go through. We will start by looking at the carrier gas itself and the important aspects which affect the quality of your gas chromatography. We will also look at sampling techniques, and the various options that are available, emphasising which techniques are most applicable to the different sample types you may encounter.

We will then go on to discuss how our sample analyte molecules are transferred through the injection system and onto the column. This will cover important considerations for optimisation of split and splitless injections, as well as a look at more specialised injection techniques for thermally unstable samples, such as cool-on-column and PTV inlets.

After injection your sample the reaches the column and starts interacting with the stationary phase. As part of this process we will look at the phenomenon of band broadening and how your column and choice of carrier gas have a direct effect on the efficiency of your separations.

As we go further through the course we will look into much more detail at what else is happening in your column – considering the chemistry of your analytes and how this defines the choice of stationary phase. Once we understand the chemistry of the interactions we can begin to consider the dimension of the column and also the use of temperature in your GC separations; focussing on developing optimised temperature gradients, as well as when to use isothermal separations.

To complete our story of the path of the carrier gas we will finally find ourselves at the detector. During this final session of the course we will consider what characteristics we require in a detector and from here will look in more detail at some common types of detectors, discussing the operating principles and some general troubleshooting.

Each session will be accompanied by supporting modules from CHROMacademy and we will be using some of the many animations within CHROMacademy to help clearly demonstrate the principles and processes being discussed. All four sessions should be attended in order to gain the level of understanding required to complete the Final Assessment. This is a mandatory element that you must complete to gain your certificate of course completion.

Our CHROMacademy tutors will deliver four video training sessions over a four week period with all sessions made available on-demand after their release until the course end date.

It's important you register before the course start date! To gain a certificate of completion you must complete a final assessment before the course end date - this is typically seven weeks after we release session one.

Don't worry if you miss a session you can always catch up at anytime within the seven weeks period, however we strongly suggest that you keep up to date with the sessions as they are broadcast.

Amy Claydon BSc PhD

Amy began using chromatography at the start of her academic career with nanoflow-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and a variety of other proteomics techniques, for her research into the dynamic proteome. The laboratory also focused on gas chromatographic separations of volatile biological samples.
After using chromatography for 10 years, Amy has now moved into a more training-based role with Crawford Scientific, where she hopes to share the knowledge she gained during her time in the laboratory.

Tony Taylor B.Sc. CChem FRSC Cert. Ed.

Tony has been doing, researching, teaching and training in analytical chemistry for the past 28 years. He comes from a pharmaceutical and polymer analysis background and continues to work with both liquid and gas phase techniques at Crawford Scientific (UK).
His main interests are the use of LC-MS and GC-MS for structural characterisation and the quantitation of trace components in complex matrices. He is professionally qualified trainer and is Technical Director of the CHROMacademy.
